This project is a new building the extend area of which is 9 thousand pyongs in total. It consists of lecture rooms, labs, undergraduate faculty rooms, administration offices, a conference hall and a multi-purpose hall. The existing site is sloped, being located near a wide plaza. The building added up to the northwestern corner of the site accommodates small shops serving the passers-by and students themselves. Its higher part is planned to have a community for a variety of students’ activities, while allowing them to approach the campus.
The angled shape of the building roof extends beyond a building sprawling at the southern end of the site. After all, the building is designed to express the image of the university by means of its canopy and main access. On the other hand, the lower part of the building houses lecture rooms and labs; as the site is sloped, students may have an easy access to lecture rooms or labs from any of the three lower levels.
The 18-story building which houses the undergraduate faculty rooms and professors’ labs occupies an empty site of the campus. The College of Engineering building will act as a visual landmark in the region. The metal skin of the building is futuristic, highlighting a high-tech image, while the transparent look of the tower functions as a lighthouse at night.
The two lower levels of labs and lecture rooms and their parking lot are elongated towards the west, while functioning as a main foundation for the tower. At the same time, they are linked with a memorial hall and an exhibition space located at the southeastern access. The existing gate leading to the campus is also open to the vehicles coming to or going out of the parking lot. The northern part of this building is transparent, while its western part has few windows as avoid any direct natural lights. Moreover, the dynamic outside wall line forms a striking contrast with the existing buildings. The overall layout of the building reflects the relationship between patio and outdoor space. An well-organized passage linking the outdoor spaces forms an axis on the campus, attaching a new sense of significance to the existing terrain. The access built at the southernmost tip of the site is a sequence continued from the in-campus access axis; it is linked functionally with almost every part of the campus.
기존의 부지는 경사져 있으며 커다란 광장에 인접해 있다. 5, 6층 규모의 복합상업건물들이 늘어선 주요 도로의 남서쪽 모퉁이에는 지하철 입구와 버스 정류장이 위치하고 있다. 부지의 북서쪽 모퉁이에 증축된 건물은 가로변을 지나치는 이들과 학생들을 위한 소규모 상점이 들어설 수 있도록 하고, 상층부에는 학생들의 다양한 활동과 커뮤니티를 위한 공간을 계획하였으며, 동시에 캠퍼스 안으로의 접근을 용이하게 하는 기능을 한다.
건물의 각진 지붕 형태는 부지 남측 끝 부분에 위치한 건물 너머로까지 확장되며, 캐노피와 주요 진입로를 통하여 대학의 이미지를 표현할 수 있도록 디자인되었다. 이러한 건물의 디자인은 캠퍼스와 도시 컨텍스트간의 조화를 최대화하는 환경으로서의 대학을 구성하는 중요한 요소가 된다. 또한 저층부에는 강의실과 실험실들을 두고, 경사진 부지를 이용하여 3개의 다른 층에서 용이하게 진입할 수 있도록 계획하였다.
학부실과 교수연구실을 포함한 18층 규모의 건물은 기존 캠퍼스 내에 비어 있던 부지에 새롭게 들어선 공학부 건물로, 시각적인 랜드마크로서 작용하게 된다. 건물의 외피인 메탈은 미래지향적이며, 첨단기술의 이미지를 부각시키고, 타워의 투명한 외관은 밤이면 빛을 발하는 등대로 표현된다.
2개 층의 저층부 실험동, 강의동과 주차장은 부지의 서쪽으로 긴 형태를 취하며, 타워동의 중추 역할을 하는 동시에 기존 남동쪽 진입로에 위치한 기념 홀과 전시공간으로 연계된다. 캠퍼스로 진입하는 기존의 정문은 진입로로 유지된다. 부지의 서쪽 모퉁이를 따라 연장된 8층 규모의 연구동은 도시 가로를 향한 서쪽으로 곡선형의 알루미늄 패널 파사드를 유지하며, 지붕의 형태는 경사진 지형을 그대로 반영한 것이다. 건물의 북쪽 부분은 투명하고 서쪽으로는 최소한의 창문을 두어 직사광선이 직접적으로 유입되는 것을 피하고자 하였다. 또한 역동적인 외벽선은 기존 건물들과 대조를 이룬다.
전체적인 건물의 배치는 중정과 외부공간의 디자인 관계를 고려하여 이루어졌다. 외부공간과 외부공간을 연결짓는 조직화된 통로는 캠퍼스 내에 하나의 축을 형성하며, 기존 지형에 새로운 변화를 부여한다는 의미를 갖는다. 가장 남쪽에 위치한 진입로는 캠퍼스 내에 진입축을 따라 연속된 시퀀스를 가능하게 하며, 교내 곳곳을 기능적으로 연결하는 통로가 된다.
